Where do paleontologists look for fossils?

Open in App
Solution

The place where paleontologists search for fossils:

  1. The preserved remains, or signs of remains, of extinct animals, are called fossils.
  2. A full organism or only a portion of one can be preserved as a fossil.
  3. Fossils can be formed from feathers, shells, bones, and even leaves.
  4. Fossils are discovered at the place where sedimentary strata of the appropriate age are exposed.
  5. River valleys, cliffs, and hillsides, as well as man-made exposures like quarries and road cuttings, are the greatest spots.
  6. The geologic age is also a key factor in selecting the place to search.
  7. Fossils are found more commonly in sedimentary rocks than igneous rocks.
