Question

Where do protons accumulate in the mitochondria?

Open in App
Solution

Protons accumulation in the mitochondria:

  1. Protons develop in the periplasmic spaces of cells.
  2. The gap seen between inlet and outlet mitochondrial is known as intermembrane space.
  3. It produces cellular energy, and ions are moved back into the matrix.
  4. As electrons pass through the electron transport mechanism in the inner membrane, protons collect in the intermembrane area.
  5. During adenosine triphosphate, the ion differential throughout the membrane promotes ATP production.
