Open in App
Solution

Oxytocin:

A hormone that acts on all organs in the body and as a chemical messenger in the brain, controlling key factors of the reproductive system along with childbirth, lactation and aspects of human behavior is called oxytocin.

Release of oxytocin:

  1. Oxytocin is produced largely in the hypothalamus, from where it is released into the circulation via the pituitary gland or carried to other parts of the brain and spinal cord, where it binds to oxytocin receptors to change behavior and physiology.
  2. The posterior pituitary gland secretes oxytocin.
  3. Oxytocin is created when sensory neurons are engaged during birth, breastfeeding, or sexual activity.
  4. Low-intensity skin stimulation also triggers the release of oxytocin.
