Which enzyme is capable of nitrogen reduction?

Open in App
Solution

The nitrogenase enzyme is capable of nitrogen reduction.

Nitrogenase enzyme:

  1. This enzyme is required to fix atmospheric nitrogen (N≡N). It is made up of Mo-Fe protein.
  2. It catalyzes the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia.
  3. Reduction of inert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia by living organisms is called biological nitrogen-fixation.
  4. Only certain prokaryotic organisms (some bacteria and cyanobacteria) are capable of fixing N2 . Such microbes are called N2 -fixers.
  5. These N2 -fixing microbes contain an exclusive enzyme, Nitrogenase.
