Question

Which region of the pituitary releases oxytocin?

Open in App
Solution

Posterior Pituitary Gland:

  1. Oxytocin is released by the neurohypophysis (pars nervosa), the posterior portion of the pituitary gland.
  2. The hypothalamus produces oxytocin, which is then sent axonally to the neurohypophysis.
  3. Our body's smooth muscles are affected by oxytocin, which causes them to contract.
  4. When giving birth, it causes a strong contraction of the uterus in females and causes the mammary gland to secrete milk.
  5. It is also known as the "birth hormone" for this reason.
