Vasopressin:

  1. It decreases water excretion by the kidney by increasing water consumption in accumulated ducts.
  2. Vasopressin is also known as an antidiuretic hormone.
  3. It is a peptide hormone that is against diuresis.
  4. ADH is also called vasopressin because it causes vasoconstriction- constriction of blood vessels.

The pituitary releases vasopressin:

  1. The posterior pituitary releases vasopressin.
  2. It is neural tissue and comprises only the distal axons of the hypothalamic magnocellular neuron that is made up of the neurohypophysis.
  3. The posterior pituitary is also called Neurohypophysis.
  4. Transference of hormones proceeds from neurons situated in hypothalamic brain regions such as the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus for secretion straight into the peripheral circulation.
