  1. DNA is the genetic material which car­ries all the hereditary information.
  2. Genes are the small segments of DNA, consisting mostly of 250 – 2 million base pairs.
  3. A gene code for a polypeptide molecule, where three nitrogenous bases sequence stands for one amino acid.

Identification:

  1. DNA was not “invented”. The very first instance of DNA being identified as a unique molecule can be traced back to 1869.
  2. A Swiss chemist named Friedrich Miescher isolated it from human white blood cells.
