Why can multiple alleles result in many different phenotypes for a trait?

Open in App
Solution

Multiple allelism:

  1. When more than 2 alternative forms of a gene occupy the same locus on a chromosome, it is called multiple allelism.
  2. Here, more than 2 alleles are governing the same character.
  3. This can result in many phenotypes for a trait.
  4. The more allele options for a particular gene, the more is the possibility of combinations and hence more possible phenotypes.
  5. Example - ABO blood group
  6. Multiple alleles can be found only when population studies are made.
