Question

Why do centromeres of chromosomes not split during anaphase I?

Open in App
Solution

Anaphase I:

  1. Anaphase I of meiosis I is characterized by kinetochore microtubules shortened which in turn isolates homologous chromosomes and induces them to move towards opposite poles.
  2. Each chromosome has a pair of sister chromatids.
  3. At the end of anaphase I, two haploid sets are present at each end of the cell.
  4. Because of these factors, the centromeres do not split during anaphase I.
