Why does the sporangium grow upwards from the base of hornworts?

Sporangium in Hornworts :-

  1. In Hornworts, sporangium is present at the base of the body and just above that, there is a meristem region which adds new cells for more sporocytes to be produced means the cells at the apex are the oldest.
  2. As the sporocytes mature, the tip dries and spores fall apart from the sporangium.
  3. On this side old sporangium falls off, the new one is added simultaneously.
