Why is genetic variation important for evolution?

Open in App
Solution

Genetic variation:

  1. Evolution is the directional change in characteristics of organisms or population over generations.
  2. It is mainly based on the phenomenon of survival of the fittest.
  3. Genetic variation is known as the presence of different genomes in organisms of a species.
  4. It allows natural selection to increase or decrease alleles (variant form of a gene) frequency already in the population.
  5. This leads to a change in the gene pool of organisms and guides the way towards evolution due to changes in environmental circumstances.
  6. Hence, genetic variation is important for evolution.
