Question

Why is mitosis in animals called astral mitosis?

Open in App
Solution

Astral mitosis:

  1. The animal cell almost doubles in size during the initial stage of karyokinesis, and it usually becomes spherical as the cytoplasm thickens and becomes more viscous.
  2. Both the nucleus and the cytoplasm experience numerous alterations that nearly all take place at once.
  3. The centriole divides into two and disperses to occupy the two poles of the cell.
  4. Aster, or fragile microtubules, are star-like structures that develop around centrioles.
  5. As a result, astral mitosis is the name given to mitosis in animal cells.
