Question

Why is protista not a true kingdom?

Open in App
Solution

Protista

  1. Protists are simple eukaryotic organisms that are not plants, animals, or fungi.
  2. Although most protists are unicellular, they can also be found in colonies of cells.
  3. The majority of protists live in water, moist terrestrial settings, or as parasites.
  4. Plants share a common ancestry and belong to the same Kingdom.
  5. Protists can be either multicellular or unicellular.
  6. One of the main reasons why protists are no longer classified as a kingdom is because they are polyphyletic, meaning they evolved from multiple ancestral lineages.
  7. However, science has largely accepted that the taxonomic grouping known as Kingdom Protista has a diverse spectrum of organisms that are not closely related.
