Question

0.7 g of iron combine directly with 0.4 g of sulphur to form FeS . If 2.8g of Fe are dissolved in dil. HCl and excess of sodium sulphide sol is added , 4.4 g of FeS are precipitated . Show that this proves the law of constant proportion

Solution

Method I :Fe +S FeSMass of Fe = 0.7 gMass of S = 0.4 g0.7 g of Fe reacts with 0.4 g of S1 g of Fe reacts with = 0.40.7 × 1 = 0.5714 g of SMethod II :Mass of Fe = 2.8 gMass of FeS =4.4 gMass of S = 4.4-2.8 = 1.6 g2.8 g of Fe reacts with 1.6 g of S1 g of Fe reacts with = 1.62.8 × 1 = 0.5714 g of SAs both methods gives same amount of S, 0.5714 g, law of constant proportion is obeyed.
