Question

0.76 g of a silver salt of a dibasic acid was ignited. It gave 0.54 g of pure silver. The molecular mass of the acid is .

Solution

Mass of the silver salt taken = 0.76 g
Mass of silver left                 = 0.54 g
Basicity of the acid               = 2

We know that,

Weight of silver saltEqivalent weight of silver salt=Weight of silverEqivalent weight of silver

0.76E+107=0.54108

Solving for E, we get E = 45

Since the acid is dibasic,

Mw=Ew×basicity

Mw=45×2

Mw=90 g
