1.00 g of a chlorid of an element contains 0.835 g of chlorine. If the vapour density of the chloride is 85, find the atomic weight of the element an its valency.

Mass of metal chloride =1g
Mass of chlorine = 0.835g
Mass of metal = 1-0.835=0.165g
Equivalent mass of metal=0.1650.835×35.5=7.01
Valency of metal=2×vapourdensityE+35.5=2×857.01+35.5=4
Thus, the atomic mass of the element =Equivalent weight×valencey
=7.01×4
=28.04 g/mol
