Charles I was born on 19 November, 1600, in Scotland. He was the son of James VI (who later became James I). He became heir to the throne of Scotland after the death of his brother, Prince Henry, in 1612. He became the second Stuart King of Great Britain, in 1625. Controversy and disputes dogged Charles throughout his reign. They eventually led to civil wars in Scotland, Ireland, and England. The civil wars were essentially confrontations between the monarchy and Parliament over the definitions of the powers of the monarchy and Parliament's authority. These constitutional disagreements were made worse by religious animosities and financial disputes. On 20 January, 1649, Charles I was charged with high treason 'against the realm of England'. The King was sentenced to death and executed in a scaffold in 1649.
