Solution

1) Archimedes' principle indicates that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces. [2 Marks]

2)
Given:
Density of metal cube = 9.0 g/cm3
Density of liquid = 1.2 g/cm3
Side of the cube = 5 cm
Volume of the cube =5×5×5=125 cm3

To find the weight of the cube:
Mass of the cube = volume of the cube x density of the cube
= 125×9=1125 g
∴ Weight of the cube = 1125 gf [2 marks]

The weight of the cube acts downwards
Upthrust acting on the cube = weight of the liquid moved
=volume of the cube×density of the liquid×g

= 125×1.2×g=150 gf

Upthrust on the cube acts in the upward direction
Tension in thread = total force acting in the downward direction
= weight of the cube acting downwards – upthrust acting on the cube
= 1125150=975 gf (or) 9.75 N [4 marks]
