Following circumstances led to the formation of an independent trade union called the Solidarity in Poland;
.Poland was ruled by the United Worker's Party for many years. No other political party was allowed to contest elections and form the government.
.The workers were restricted from forming their individual trade unions.
.People were not allowed to speak anything against the government.
.There was the censorship of the press.
.Finally, the dismissal of a women crane operator from service on unjustified grounds have added fuel to fire.The workers of Lenin Shipyard in the city of Gdansk organised a strike in August 1940 in protest which was considered as illegal but it led to the formation of Solidarity, an independent trade union.
