Question

1 Kg of an ideal gas at T1 Temperature is heated isochorically till its temperature is tripled. It is then cooled at constant pressure to its original initial temperature. The gas is then allowed to expand to its original volume isothermally . The work done during the cycle is

Solution

Wnet=W12+W23+W31

W12=0

Since,V=0in isochoric process

W23=F2(V3V2)=R(T23T1)

=2RT1

W31=RT1lnV1V3

In Process 2-3

P2V2T2=P3V3T3

V2V3=T2T3=3

Since,P2=P3

W31=RT1lnV2V3 = RT1lnT2T3

=RT1ln3

Wnet=0+(2RT1+RT1ln3)

=0.90RT1

-ve sign means work is done on the gas .
