Question

1 litre of a mixture of CO and CO2 is taken. This mixture is passed through a tube containing red-hot charcoal. The volume now becomes 1.6 times. The volumes are measured under the same condition. Find the percentage concentration of CO by volume.

The correct option is B 40%
Let volume of CO2 be X litre
Volume of CO = 1-X litre
Only CO2 will react with charcoal ( C ) to produce CO
We assume that all CO2 is converted into CO
CO2+C2CO
Total volume of CO will be as following
let X CO2 converted to 2X CO

2X + 1-X =1.6

X=0.6

So,
concentration of CO2 is 60% by volume
Hence concentration of CO is 40% by volume
