Question

1 mole of a triatomic non-linear ideal gas is subjected to an adiabatic process from initial temperature 400 K and pressure 32 atm to final pressure 2 atm. If the expansion is carried out against vaccum, the entropy change (in cal K1) for the system is [ln2=0.7]

Solution

(ΔS)sys.=nCvlnT2T1+nRlnV2V1
or
ΔS=nCplnT2T1+nRlnP1P2
At vaccum, ΔU=0,so ΔT=0
ΔS=0+1×Rln322=Rln16
ΔS=Rln24=4Rln2=4×2×0.7=5.6 cal/K.
