Question

1. Nucleic Acids (DNA & RNA) are called as Deoxyribose nucleic acid and Ribose nucleic acid. Why these are called as acids ?

Solution

Nucleic acids are acidic in nature because of the presence of phosphate groups. Phosphate groups are present at the exposed surface. These phosphate groups are proton donors at neutral pH and are acidic in nature. The hydrophobic base are kept in the centre of the helix, protected from water. These bases thus, do not take part in reactions and thus make the overall chemical nature of the DNA molecule to be acidic. Same is the case for RNA.
