Question

1 kg of a gas does 20 kJ of work and receives 16 kJ of heat when it is expanded between two states. A second kind of expansion can be found between the same initial and final state, which requires a heat input of 9 kJ. The work done by the gas in the second expansion is:

Solution

The correct option is D 13 kJ
Let the two states be A and B, then,

Applying 1st law of thermodynamics,

ΔQ=WAB+ΔU

16 kJ=20 kJ+ΔU

ΔU=4 kJ

As the internal energy is a state function, so in the second process also ΔU=4 kJ

Applying 1st law of thermodynamics,

ΔQ=ΔU+ΔW

ΔW=ΔQΔU=9 kJ(4 kJ)

ΔW=13 kJ

Hence, option (D) is correct.
