Solution

The correct option is D 5
α particle is He2+ ion, means one αparticle carries 2e charge.

Number of alpha particles striking on sphere is,
n=1012 per sec.

Charge to be accumulated on sphere is,
q=1.6 μC=1.6×106 C

Let t be the time in which the sphere gets charged by 1.6 μC.

Charge accumulated = Charge adding per sec × time

q=n(2e)×t

1.6×106=n(2×1.6×1019)×t

t=1.6×1061012×2×1.6×1019 (n=1012)

t=102=5 sec

Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.

Why this question ?Tip: When one αparticle falls on sphere, +2e charge gets accumulated.
