Question

10 g fairly concentrated solution of CuSO4 is electrolyzed using 0.01 F of electricity. Calculate:
(a) The weight of resulting solution(g) (write the value to the nearest integer).

Open in App
Solution

(a) The elctrolysis is carried out using platinum electrodes.
0.01 F of electricity will deposit 0.01×159.62=0.8g of Cu.
The mass of liberated oxygen will be 0.01×324=0.08g
Hence, the wight of the resulting solution will be 100.80.08=9.12g
(b) However if the electrolysis is carried out using copper electrode, then there will be no change in the mass of the solution.
