Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and other geologic phenomena are examples of natural disasters.
It is the harm done to people and their possessions that matters the most. As a result, ‘disasters occur when threats meet vulnerability’. If a strong earthquake happens in uninhabited areas, it is usually not seen as a disaster.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement provides assistance in times of need, such as natural catastrophes. The Geneva Conventions, as well as Article 11 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, establish a foundation of humanitarian and human rights international law.
