Question

10 ml of ammonia was enclosed in an eudiometer and subjected to electric sparks. The sparks were continued till there was no further increase in volume. The volume after sparking measured 20ml. Now 30ml of O2 were added and sparking was continued again. The new volume then measured 27.5ml. All volumes were measured under identical conditions of temperature and pressure. Calculate the molecular formula of ammonia. Nitrogen and Hydrogen are diatomic.

Solution

The correct option is D NH3
Let the formula of the ammonia be NH3.
The reaction for the decomposition of ammonia is 2NH3N2+3H2.
Thus 2 moles of ammonia will give 4 moles of products.
Hence, 10 ml of ammonia will give 20 ml of products.
This is actually obtained during sparking.
15 ml of this is hydrogen gas which will use 7.5 ml of oxygen added, to form 15 ml of liquid water. Hence, 22.5 ml of oxygen and 5 ml of nitrogen will be left, which is equal to a total volume of 27.5 ml, as we got in the question.
Hence, the formula of ammonia is correct as NH3.
