Solution

The trapping of solar heat energy by certain gaseous molecules present in the earth's atmosphere is called greenhouse effect.

Greenhouse effect:

  • Solar energy is absorbed by the surface of the seas and terrestrial plants. This absorbed radiation is converted into heat and re-radiated back into space.
  • Infrared radiation (IR) is absorbed by certain gaseous molecules in the environment and re-radiated in all directions.
  • As a result, these gases keep the earth's surface temperature stable. The gases that absorb these IR rays are known as greenhouse gases, and the process is known as the greenhouse effect. This mechanism is necessary for life to exist on Earth.
  • CO2, H2O, N2O, CH4, O3, and CFCs are examples of greenhouse gases.
