For preparing oxygen in the laboratory, precautions must be taken as oxygen supports combustion and hence can cause fire easily.
Various precautions are needed:

  1. Do not try to collect the first - few emerging bubbles of the gas produced as it is the air which is present in the delivery tube which is evolved out.
  2. Method of gas collection should be appropriate and correct.
  3. Try keeping all inflammable and burning apparatus away from oxygen as oxygen is a supporter of combustion.
