Question

11. Write the chemical formulae for each of the following compounds:

(d) Calcium oxide

Open in App
Solution

Chemical formula can be written by using criss-cross method.

In the criss-cross method, the numerical value of the ion charge of the two atoms are crossed over, which becomes the subscript of the other ion.

  • For example, Calcium has an atomic number of 20 and a valency of 2.
  • It signifies the outermost shell has two electrons for bonding.
  • Oxide (oxygen) has an atomic number of 8 and possesses 6 electrons in its outermost shell.
  • It only need two more atom for bonding.
  • As a result, we'll use calcium atoms to bond with one atom of oxygen.

Hence, by using criss-cross method, the formula of the Calcium oxide is CaO
