Question

1120 ml of ozonised oxygen (O2+O3) at 1 atm & 273 K weighs 1.76 gm. Find the reduction in volume on passing this through alkaline pyrogallol solution is:

Open in App
Solution

Molecular weight (or) mass of oxygen =32
Molecular weight (or) mass of ozone =48
Volume of ozonised oxygen =1120 ml
Assume volume of oxygen =x ml
volume of ozone =1120x ml
at STP (standard temperature and pressure).
Weight of x ml of O2=32x22400
weight of 1120x ml of O3=48(1120x)22400
hence, 32x22400+48(1120x)22400=1.76
x=1433616=896 ml.
Reduction in volume on passing the mixture through alkaline pyrogallol solution is 896 ml.
