Question

13. A long cylindrical vessel having linear coefficient of expansion α is filled with a liquid
upto a certain level. On heating it is observed that the level of the liquid in the
cylinder remains the same. What is the volume coefficient of expansion of the liquid?

Solution

Here, no change in level of liquid means the change in volume of liquid and vessel is equal. So the volume coefficient of expansion of liquid and vessel will be equal. Since theα is linearcoefficient of expansion of vessel, we know that 3α. So it will be the volume coefficient of expansion of liquid. Answer is 3α
