Question

14. Describe water cycle?

Open in App
Solution

  • The circulation of water between land and ocean is known as the water cycle.
  • It involves the following steps:
  1. Evaporation: During the daytime, sunlight falls on the water of oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds. The fields and other land areas also receive sunlight. As a result, water from all these places continuously changes into vapor. This is called evaporation.
  2. Transpiration: The process by which the plants and trees lose water in the form of water vapor through the pores of their leaves is known as transpiration.
  3. Formation of clouds and rain: Water from land and the air containing water is heated up by the sun and being lighter rises high in the sky. As air rises to high altitude the water vapor present in it gets cooled. The cold water vapor condenses to form tiny droplets of water. These tiny droplets of water form clouds in the sky. These drops of water fall on the earth in the form of rain.
  4. Water back to the ocean: In many cold regions, the water drops in the sky freeze to form snow (ice). So, water also falls to the earth in the frozen state called snow. Water is formed by the melting of snow and some of the rainwater flows into rivers and finally goes into oceans. In this way, water taken from the earth returns to the earth and the water cycle is completed.
