Female gametophyte in a flowering plant is known as embryo sac. Initially the diploid megasporangium divides by meiosis to form 4 haploid megaspores. Out of these 4 megaspores, one survives. This survived megaspore undergo mitosis to produce 7 celled 8 nucleated female gametophyte or embryo sac. The central cell in the embryo sac is diploid and fuses with the sperm to form triploid endosperm that nourishes the growing embryo. The cell closest to the micropyle forms 2 synergids and an egg cell and on the opposite end forms the antipodals (later on degenerate).
