Question

178(c) Name a salt insoluble in cold water but soluble in hot water.

Open in App
Solution

  • Lead chloride (PbCl2) is insoluble in cold water and soluble in hot water.
  • It gives Pb2+ and Cl- ions in hot water.
  • Lead chloride has high lattice enthalpy, due to which the electrostatic bonds cannot break in cold water. So, it will not dissolve in cold water.
  • But at high temperature or in hot water, hydration enthalpy will overcome the lattice energy and bonds will break in the water. So, it will dissolve in hot water.
