Question

1kg of ice at 0°c is being continuously heated by a heater of 1KW calculate the time interval for ice to melt completely to water 0°c.and water to 100°

Open in App
Solution

Specific latent heat of ice = 336000 J/kg/k
Specific heat capacity of water = 42200 J/kg/k

Heat supplied by electric heater = 1kW= 1000 J/s

(i) Heat required to melt 1 kg of ice at 0 ºC completely to water at 0 ºC = Specific latent heat of ice = 3,36000 J

Hence time required = 336000/1000 = 336 s.

(ii) Heat required by 1 kg of water to be heated from 0 ºC to 100 ºC = m c dT = 1 × 4200 × (100 – 0) = 420000 J

Hence time required = 420000/1000 = 420 s.
