Question

2 bodies of different masses (one light the other heavy) are thrown vertically upwards with same initial speed which will rise to a greater height?justify

Solution

Dear student
If we ignore air resistance then both will rise to the same height.
However if we take air resistance into our account then the heavier body will rise more than the lighter one.
Here is the explanationlet m<M the force of air resistance is F=-bV where b is constant and V is velocitythe equation of motion while moving upward is ma1=mg+bV1or, a1=g+bmV1and Ma2=Mg+bV2or, a2=g+bMV2 a1and a2 are the retardations of m and M while going upwardWhen b=0 i.e. no air resistance , a1= a2=g ,hence both will rise same height. Now m<M therefore a1 > a2 (since initially V1 = V2 at the time of projection)Hence , retardations of m wiil be more than M.Hence , heavier body will rise more under air resistance.Regards
