There are many reasons of water logging. Some of them are:
Inadequate drainage of overland run-off raises percolation rates, which serves to raise the water table.
The infiltration of river water into the soil.
Over and intensive irrigation also causes water logging.
Water seepage from earthen canals continuously adds a substantial amount of water to the subsurface reservoir.
