Solution

Let the number of illiterate women be x.
Then the number of literate women will be x + 83.
It is given that the sum of the numbers of illiterate and literate women is 517.
∴ x + x + 83 = 517
or 2x + 83 = 517
On subtracting 83 from both the sides, we obtain:
2x + 83 − 83 = 517 − 83
or 2x = 434
On dividing both the sides by 2, we obtain:
2x2=4342
or x = 217
∴ Number of illiterate women is 217.
And the number literate women is x + 83 = 217 + 83 = 300.
