Question

2 kg of ice at20oC is mixed with 5 kg of water at 20oC in an insulating vessel having a negligible heat capacity. Calculate the final mass of water remaining in the container. lt is given that the specific heats of water and ice are 1 kca1/kg/C and 0.5 kca1/kg/C respectively while the latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 kcal/kg :

Solution

The correct option is A 6 kg
Energy required for increasing temperature of all the ice till 0oC is msiceΔT=2×0.5×20=20kcal
assume m mass of ice melts into water
Energy required for melting =mLfusion=(80m)kcal
all the energy is provided by the water
Energy supplied by water to cool it from 20oC to 0oC=mswaterΔT=5×1×20=100kcal
hence 20kcal+(80m)kcal=100kcal
which gives m=1kg
hence total water in the mixture =5+1=6kg
