Question

2 L of H2 and 2L of O2 are mixed at 10oC and 1 atm. An electric spark is passed through the mixture, upon which there is a 'pop'. On bringing back the temperature and pressure to the original values, what will be the volume of the gas left?

Solution

The equation for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen can be written as:
2H2+O22H2O

Therefore the volume ratio is = 2: 1: 2

Given that 2L of H2 and 2L of O2 are made to react together, but according to the reacting volume ratio, 2L of hydrogen needs 1 L of oxygen.

Therefore 1 L of oxygen remains unreacted.
