Question

2. Which method you will use to separate:

(b) Salt from water and mud.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Let us take salt dissolved in water and mud suspended (and/or floating/sinking) in a beaker.
  2. Stir up the solution to make the mud/water mix homogenous (also for complete separation).
  3. Pour the mix through a filter +funnel set up. Notice how the water flows straight through, but the mud is retained in the filter paper. Now we have a saltwater solution.
  4. A mixture of salt and water can be separated by the process of evaporation.
  5. The water will evaporate and change into vapors while the salt will be left behind in the container.
  6. The vapors can be collected by cooling them by a process called condensation when these vapors will change into water droplets.
