Question

Why are the classification systems changing every now and then?

Open in App
Solution

Changes in the classification system:

  1. The classification system started with two kingdom classification, which led to three and four kingdoms.
  2. The five-kingdom classification was the most commonly used system to classify organisms.
  3. But then comes the three-domain system for classification which includes Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya, and the kingdoms are included under it.

Reasons:

  1. New organisms are constantly being discovered and for classifying them, a new system needs to be used.
  2. This is why the new classification system is constantly developed to classify organisms based on the similarity in characters.
  3. This helps with the distinct placement of the organism in the different categories of the taxonomic hierarchy.
