Question

200 ml of a gaseous mixture containing CO,CO2 and N2 on complete combustion in just sufficient amount of O2 showed contraction of 40 ml. When the resulting gases were passed through KOH solution it reduces by 50% then calculate the volume ratio of Vco2:Vco:VN2 in orginial mixture.

Solution

The correct option is D 1 : 4: 5
In this example, the supply of oxygen is limited. It is just enough to react with nitrogen, to form dinitrogen pentoxide a solid.
This gives the volume contraction of 40ml.
The total volume decreases from 200 ml to 160ml.
Half of this 160 ml, i.e, 80 ml dissolves in KOH. This is carbon dioxide.
Thus the volume of the carbon dioxide in the original mixture is 80ml.
Thus option C is the correct answer.
