  • A substance that generates hydronium (H+) ion in an aqueous solution, is termed an acid.
  • Acids turn blue litmus red.
  • The uses of acids are:

(i) A dilute solution of Acetic acid is called Vinegar. It is used as a food preservative.

(ii) Batteries contain Sulphuric acid. The batteries are used to start the engines of automobiles.

(iii) Nitric acid is used in the industrial production of explosives, dyes, paints, and fertilizers.

(iv) Soft drinks contain Phosphoric acid to give the fizz.
