Question

20ml each of oxygen and hydrogen and 10ml of carbon monoxide are exploded in a enclosure What will be the volume and composition of the gases when they are cooled to room temperature and pressure

Open in App
Solution

2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

2 V1 Vnil

2CO+ O2 → 2CO2

2 V1 V2 V

From equations, 2V of H2 reacts with = 1 V of O2

Hence, 20 ml of H2 will react with = 10 ml of O2

So, remaining O2 is 20 - 10= 10 ml

Similarly for 10 ml of CO, the oxygen required is = 5ml

So, remaining O2 is 10 - 5 = 5 ml

The composition of resulting mixture will be 5 ml of O2 and 10 ml of CO2.
