Question

24. Two balls of the same size but of different materials, one of rubber and the other one of iron, are kept on the smooth floor of a moving train. The brakes are applied suddenly to stop the train. Will the balls start rolling? If so, in which direction? Will they move with the same speed? Give reasons for your answer.

Solution

Dear Student,

Yes both balls will move due to inertia of motion , they will move in forward direction as the train and balls were moving in forward direction initially now when train applies brakes the balls still will be in motion in forward direction due to inertia of motion.

They both will move with different speeds as they both have different mass (due to same size but different material) and thus different inertia.
