Question

25 ml of a solution containing HCl and sulphuric acid required 10 ml of a 2.0 N NaOH solution for neutralisation. 10 ml of the same acid mixture on being treated with an excess of BaCl2 gave 0.699 gm of BaSO4. The normality of HCl is .

Solution

X1 mmol of HCl and X2 mmol of H2SO4 are present in 25 ml acid mixture.
So, X1+2X2=10×2 (1)
Again,
BaCl2+H2SO4BaSO4+2HCl
Since we are taking only 10 ml of the acidic solution,
X2×1025=0.699233
X2=7.5 mmol
X1=5 mmol
So, normality of HCl=525=0.2 N
