Question

25 mL of a solution of ferric alum, Fe2(SO4)3.(NH4)2.SO4.24 H2O containing 1.25 g of the salt was boiled with iron when the reaction occurs as:

Fe+Fe2(SO4)33FeSO4

The unreacted iron was filtered off and solution treated with 0.107N KMnO4 in acid medium.
What is titre value of Fe in mL as nearest integer?

Solution

The reaction is as follows :

Fe+Fe2(SO4)33FeSO4

964 g Fe2(SO4)3.(NH4)2SO4.24H2O=3×152 g FeSO4

1.25 g Fe2(SO4)3.(NH4)2SO4.24H2O gives =3×152×1.25964=0.5912 g FeSO4

This FeSO4 is oxidized by KMnO4

Meq. of FeSO4 = Meq. of KMnO4

0.5912(1521)×1000=0.107×V

V=36.36 mL
